The Pinnacle, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, is the centrepiece of a cluster of towers that will define the future skyline of London. It has set the benchmark for the next generation of environmentally responsible buildings. We were engaged to design the building services and monitor the construction.
The 66-storey, 131,500 sq m building includes a high-performance, externally ventilated façade which minimises solar gain while maximising natural daylight to occupied spaces. This façade design also enables a mixed mode of ventilation to naturally ventilate the building when external conditions permit, further reducing energy and carbon emissions.
Ultra-high efficient engineering systems are the next step in reducing energy and are complemented with low carbon technologies by integrating photovoltaic cells into the cladding at the top of the building. The innovative use of floor-by-floor ventilation via ceiling-mounted air handling units has provided an extremely flexible design which maximises the net internal area by reducing the risers required within the cores, significantly contributing to the viability of the scheme.
The overall design will reduce carbon emissions to less than 50% of a more typical air conditioned office building.
