The Northumbria Health and Care Academy, located in the heart of the North East of England, was created as a pioneering educational space designed to foster innovation and collaboration in healthcare delivery. A key goal was to create a space that would prioritise the health and well-being of its occupants—students, staff, and visitors—while also championing sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Hilson Moran played a pivotal role in helping realise the Academy’s vision. Working as WELL Accredited Professionals, we provided expert advice on the integration of wellness and sustainability features into the building’s design. Our team was instrumental in ensuring that the building met the rigorous requirements for WELL Certification™ by focusing on areas that promote physical and mental well-being, as well as environmental performance.
At the heart of the Northumbria Health and Care Academy is a design that prioritises people. The WELL Certification™ focuses on seven key concepts: Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Fitness, Mind, and Comfort. Throughout the project, we ensured that these elements were embedded into the building’s design, providing a holistic approach to occupant health.
The design from P+HS Architects incorporated features such as a calming, nature-inspired interior palette, expansive floor to ceiling windows to maximise natural light, and communal outdoor garden spaces to promote health and restoration.
In addition to its focus on human health, the Northumbria Health and Care Academy also embraces a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. Our WELL Accredited Professionals worked closely with the design team to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy conservation, ensuring the Academy not only meets the needs of its occupants but also contributes positively to the environment.
